Coolie is an up coming Indian Tamil-language activity thriller film directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Kalanithi Maran’s Sun Pictures. The film stars Rajinikanth in the main part, nearby Nagarjuna, Upendra, Sathyaraj, Soubin Shahir, Sundeep Kishan, Shruti Haasan, and Reba Monica John.
The film was authoritatively announced in September 2023 beneath the provisional title Thalaivar 171 as Rajinikanth’s 171st film as a lead performing artist and the official title was reported in April 2024. Central photography commenced the taking after July in Hyderabad along with a plan in Visakhapatnam, which was taken after by another plan held at Jaipur. The film has music composed by Anirudh Ravichander, cinematography taken care of by Girish Gangadharan and altering by Philomin Raj.

Development
In late 2019, chief Lokesh Kanagaraj met Rajinikanth and described a script that inspired the performing artist. The venture was at first gathered to be Rajinikanth’s 169th film but afterward got to be Prison guard (2023). Generation was postponed due to COVID-19 and Rajinikanth’s commitments to Annaatthe (2021). In May 2021, Lokesh conducted a photoshoot with Rajinikanth for a potential film, which was afterward affirmed as Thalaivar 171. In September, Sun Pictures formally declared the venture, which marks Rajinikanth’s collaboration with Lokesh and the generation house for the fifth time.
The film was titled Coolie in April 2024, and unlike Lokesh’s previous films, it focuses on gold smuggling instead of drugs. It is a standalone project, separate from the Lokesh Cinematic Universe
Pre-production
Lokesh Kanagaraj began writing the script for Coolie in 2015, during the post-production of Maanagaram. He co-wrote the script with Chandhru Anbazhagan. The first half of the script was completed in six months. The promotional teaser was shot and completed by April 9, 2024.
In late 2023, cinematographer Girish Gangadharan replaced Manoj Paramahamsa, and Anirudh Ravichander returned as the music composer. Lokesh kept most of his regular crew, including stunt choreographers Anbariv and editor Philomin Raj. The film was shot using an IMAX-certified camera, a first in Tamil cinema.
Casting
Rajinikanth’s look in Coolie would feature a grey hairstyle, similar to his look in Kaala (2018). Nagarjuna was cast as the antagonist, while Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Sathyaraj, and Upendra were also confirmed for important roles. Sandy’s involvement was announced in March 2024, and Reba Monica John confirmed her participation in December. Fahadh Faasil declined a role due to scheduling conflicts.
Release
Coolie is being aimed to release worldwide in 2025 in standard and IMAX formats. Apart from the original Tamil language, the film is also scheduled to release with dubbed versions in the Hindi, Telugu and Kannada-languages.
