Viduthalai Part 2 is an Indian Tamil-language period political crime thriller film directed and co-produced by Vetrimaaran. The film is a direct sequel to Viduthalai Part 1 and is the second of a two-part adaptation of Jeyamohan’s short story Thunaivan (translated as Companion). It follows the journey of a police constable involved in an operation to apprehend a revolutionary.

The film features an ensemble cast with Vijay Sethupathi, Soori, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Bhavani Sre, Rajiv Menon, Ilavarasu, Balaji Sakthivel, Saravana Subbiah, Chetan, and Munnar Ramesh reprising their roles from the first film. Joining the cast are Manju Warrier, Kishore, Anurag Kashyap, Bose Venkat, Vincent Asokan, and Ken Karunas.

Filming for the first part of Viduthalai began in December, and the film was initially announced as a single project in 2021. However, it was later decided to split it into two parts. The production of the first part was completed by late December of the following year, and the second part wrapped up by early October. Ilaiyaraaja composed the film’s score and music, R. Velraj handled cinematography, and R. Ramar was responsible for editing.

Both parts of Viduthalai were screened at the International Film Festival Rotterdam in January, with the theatrical release following in December. The film grossed ₹63 crore worldwide.

Plot

After the police capture Perumal “Vaathiyaar”, they plan to transfer him to another camp. Along the way, Vaathiyaar narrates his past to the officers, recounting the accidental death of his friend Karuppan and how it led him to join a communist party. He recalls his disagreements with the leader over peaceful protests and his belief in using arms against oppressors. He also explains the tragic bombing of a train track bridge, which was initially intended to be a hoax but resulted in an accidental explosion, causing devastation among Vaathiyaar and his followers.

As the officers begin to sympathize with Vaathiyaar, including Constable Kumaresan, they arrive at the camp. However, Vaathiyaar’s gang attacks and recaptures him. A large confrontation ensues, and after a prolonged struggle, Vaathiyaar finally surrenders. In a tragic twist, the new police leader orders his execution. As Vaathiyaar’s body is being transported, Kumaresan, who is driving, crashes the vehicle at the edge of a mountain. He walks into the jungle, and the film ends with him writing a letter to his mother, stating that this could be his last letter.

The film, along with its predecessor, had its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Theatrical
Viduthalai Part 2 was released theatrically on 20 December 2024. The distribution rights for Tamil Nadu were acquired by Red Giant Movies.

The post-theatrical streaming rights were acquired by Amazon Prime Video, where it began streaming in January 2025.
